THE ASSIGNMENT

Create a sales catalog for a collection of 30 or more items in inDesign.

The images of the seed packages themselves were done by me, but there needed to be supplementary visuals. All of the produce and flower photos were generated using Firefly. The only exception were the full page divider photos, which were sourced from Pixabay and Freepik.

TYPOGRAPHY

The final typographic system chosen with which to proceed with the catalog. Bodoni italic was used to be an elegant contrast against the sans only body text. Futura book weight was a suitable at small sizes, and featured as the typeface for body text. Variations of Avant Garde Gothic added texture and established the information hierarchy on the page.

The individual items, after undergoing numerous revisions would be shown with a big bold name, a less weighty variation label, the flag of the country of product origin, then be followed up by the item description, and lastly the price and item number.

FINAL PRODUCT

The final catalog came out to be 32 pages, an 8 page increase from the first draft. Every catalog, for printing purposes, had to be designed with a page count that's a multiple of four.

MONOGRAM

A monogram was designed for the company for the sake of adding more identity. The double B being for "Botanic Boutique" with a visual accent of two leaves in reference to it being a gardening company. The monogram only appeared fully on the back cover, so it seemed that business cards would be a fitting way to bring it back.

CONCEPTS

While creating concepts, we were supposed to reference typefaces already in existance to determine how common the idea really is. The third concept, Blacklink, was created purely on a whim in like a minute and still ended up being picked. In hindsight I'm definitely glad.

ESTABLISHING THE SYSTEM

The one thing I went into this project with knowing was that I wanted a clean system of construction. With the approved concept 3, An integral concept was that all characters would "link" together with extrusions on their left and a groove that would receive it on the right of each character. All counters would be the exact same weight and all measurements would be based around the width of the universal counter. Characters were relentlessly compared to maintain consistent proportions and new global rules would be added to ensure consistency.

Blacklink contains a total of over 250 characters, each built in Glyphs 3. To the right is a colored sample featuring the lowercase and uppercase Latin alphabet, along with punctuation and numbers.

Recreate a randomly assigned spray paint artists' graffiti style with a street art piece of our own. A five letter word is chosen, and all students will paint the same word.

SKETCH

The word chosen by the class was "funky." Dater, the artist whose style I was tasked with replicating, often makes accompanying illustrations. I felt omitting the monkey would be heinous.

DIGITAL MOCKUP

Before painting for real, we designed what we drew in pencil in a digital space so we could choose our colors and where it would end up on the wall.

IN THE REAL

The final piece process started with making a sketch based on our digital versions. I quickly got super lost in the lines and may or may not have freehanded the other 80% but nobody needs to know that. After that comes laying down color blocks. The final and largest step is lining and refining with black.

FINAL PIECE

Adding the monkey ruined my week a little, seeing as the finest lines that can be made with our caps were not fine enough. I would have preferred if I'd just left it at the letters but whatever.

Why not see how it would look on another wall? I didn't find an adequate hat or notebook mockup PSD so here we are I guess.

SKETCH

The typography done had to be of a quote that the individual has said. Naturally mine was "They look like onions." I drafted up a drawing in the dimensions of the final piece, and decided I would build the letters stacked on top of each other in waves. With the exception of "onions" all of the words would stack neatly, considering that they're all four letters long.
